Break-Your-Own Geodes

Information & Instructions

When you crack open a Moroccan Geode, you will find white quartz crystals inside. If the geode is solid, you will find a nodule of Quartz.

These geodes are mined in Morocco and are estimated to be around 34 million years old. It can take hundreds of millions of years for the space inside a geode to be filled, and many geodes remain partly hollow.

Agate filled nodules are called thunder eggs.

How are geodes formed?

Geodes are rocks that are plain on the outside but have beautiful crystals on the inside. In the Greek language, geode means “shape of the earth” and geodes are round like the earth or oblong like an egg. They can be a couple of inches or several feet in diameter.

Geodes are created in volcanic rock. Over many years, dissolved minerals seep into a hollow area and harden into an outer shell, creating the geode. The minerals continue to form on the inside walls of the shell, growing towards the center.

The most common dissolved mineral is quartz, which is what you will find in these Moroccan geodes. In other types of geodes, amethyst and other minerals are found.

To crack open your geode, first place it inside an old sock or an old towel. Lay the sock on a concrete floor or sidewalk and lightly tap your geode with a hammer. Use multiple taps to crack the geode open
slowly.

If the geode is not breaking, keep adding pressure as you tap until the geode breaks.

When breaking geodes with a hammer, you will not get two perfect halves like you would if you used a rock saw, but you will get many beautiful pieces. Most of the geodes are hollow, but a few of them will be solid. The solid ones are called nodules and are filled with quartz.
